Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce the principle and installation of environmental control systems in buildings. To introduce fire engineering and its effect on building design.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the unit, the student will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the range of Building Services incorporated within buildings; show how they may be used to actively control the internal building environment in contrast to the passive means considered in Building Environment 1, and demonstrate an understanding of the role of fire engineering in building design.

Skills:
Ability to qualitatively and quantitatively design and assess environmental and fire control systems in buildings.

Content:
Building services: Need and development; systems design; thermal environment; heating systems; mechanical ventilation; air conditioning; plant; system choice; daylighting; design of electric lighting; propagation of sound; sound transmision and insulation; acoustic design. Fire Engineering: The nature of fire; the behaviour of people in fire; different approaches to ensuring satisfactory design for prevention of fires and survivability; fire control systems.
