Description: | Aims: * To give students a detailed understanding of a broad range of advanced electronic materials, including their synthesis, evaluation and application. * To provide students with the awareness of relevant emerging or developing technologies. * To allow students to research and evaluate a specific advanced material in depth. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning a broad range of advanced and developing electronic materials, drawing upon related disciplines where necessary, and to apply it critically. (SM1m, SM3m, SM4m). 2. Demonstrate an appreciation of the scientific and engineering context of advanced electronic materials, and to support their understanding of relevant historical, current and future developments and technologies. (SM1m, SM4m, EA5m). 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the fabrication and manufacture of advanced electronic materials. (SM3m, P2m). 4. Use technical literature and other information sources to evaluate materials for a particular application. (SM3m, P4m, G2). Skills: 1. Research and Analysis: evaluating literature (T,F,A) 2.Communication: report writing (T,F,A) 3.Independent Working (T, F, A). Content: This unit will cover the physics, materials science, manufacture and application of a variety of advanced electronic materials, such as: * Biomaterials: electrophysiology and stretchable/implantable/in-vitro electronics, including organic devices; * Large area electronic materials: thin film transistors, printed electronics; * 1D & 2D materials: principles, fabrication & application; * Superconducting materials: principles, fabrication & applications; * Magnetic materials: principles, fabrication & applications; * Optoelectronic materials: principles, fabrication & applications; * Wide-bandgap semiconductor materials for electronic applications. |
