Description: | Aims: This unit presents a variety of frameworks and models of strategy to open up narrowly defined notions of 'operations' and illustrate how all organisations are essentially defined through their operational capabilities. Throughout the course, students will experience, analyse, discuss and contrast a range of service, manufacturing, for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students should be able to: * Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of operations strategy and how market requirements and resource requirements are related * A critical awareness of the linkages between operations as a functional strategy and corporate strategy * Understand how to develop and apply operations strategy in practice. Skills: Intellectual skills * Capability to formulate and critique operations strategy in different contexts, including manufacturing, service, and non-profit organisations (T, F, A) * Ability to apply and critique theory to operations in different contexts (T, F, A) Practical skills * Understand the challenges that managers face and be able to participate in or advise on operations strategy decisions (T, F, A) * Implement a plan for operations strategy and deal with common problems that arise in the implementation process (T, F) Transferable skills * Capability to formulate and defend arguments using theory and evidence (F, A) * Develop skills to work in groups, and the capability to lead a debate, synthesize views and reach consensus (F) Content: This unit seeks to illustrate how firms may compete strategically through their operational capabilities. Operations strategy is concerned with long term decisions, decisions affecting a wide set of organisation's resources, and decisions that impact an organisation's global footprint. This longer timescale, higher level of analysis and broader level of aggregation distinguishes the module from the operations management module in semester one. Topics include the principles of operations strategy, capacity strategy, and how to develop and implement operations strategy. |
