Aims: | The unit aims to apply the theoretical principals explored in AR40105 History and Theory of Architecture and Urban Design. The unit aims to relate the individual and group understanding of a specific urban environment (physical and cultural) to the development of a brief, which is used to shape an individual building design. |
Learning Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have demonstrated the following:
Ability to:
* prepare and present building designs, using a range of media, in response to a given brief knowledge of: * current planning policy and development control legislation, including social, environmental and economic aspects, and the relevance of these to design development Understanding of: * the potential impact of building projects on existing and proposed communities * the need to critically review precedents relevant to the function, organisation and technological strategy of design proposals * the needs and aspirations of building users * the need to appraise and prepare building briefs of diverse scales and types, to define client and user requirements and their appropriateness to site and context * the contributions of architects and co-professionals to the formulation of the brief, and the methods of investigation used in its preparation. |
Skills: | An ability to work as part of a group; the critical assessment of information, and its clear communication. Design skills at an urban scale. Research and analytical skills requires in the context of the preparation of a building brief. |
Content: | Group and individual research into, and analysis of, a given urban locale including the following areas of study: social context, political context, economic context, transport infrastructure, landscape context, spatial typologies. The formulation of group urban strategy, group and subsequent individual design briefs and first iteration designs for one building type (public or residential) in one location within the established urban context. Specialist expertise will be provided by visiting Urban, Architectural, Landscape, Environmental and Structural Engineering consultants. |
