Description: | Aims: To develop the students ability to apply the principals of thermodynamics, heat transfer to problems of engineering importance.
Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* Describe the thermodynamic principles, characteristics of gas turbines, steam turbines and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) cycles.
* Undertake 1st and 2nd law analysis of energy flows and understand issues related to energy conservation and environmental impact.
* Solve simple heat transfer problems of individual or combinations of conduction in solids, convection and radiation.
* Interpret data from Steam tables and calculate the thermodynamic properties of gas-vapour mixtures.
Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.
Content: Steam plants (superheating, reheating)
CHP and combined cycles.
Gas turbines and jet engines (intercooling and reheating). Introduction to emissions and the environment.
Introduction to Heat transfer conduction in solids, convection and radiation)
