The Venturers arrived at the lovely Bradford-Upon-Avon ground with a strong team especially in the bowling department. The ground may have looked lovely from the boundary, however the pitch was not ideal for a 20-20 over game. The pitch was identical to that of a traditional English test wicket on a fifth day. The pitch had an abundance of cracks, but also a tinge of green. It was a wicket on which Shane Warne would enjoy bowling on later this summer to the English Lions. The weather conditions were not ideal for cricket or for Woolly Mammoths.
Skipper Duncan won the toss and Andy and Luke started the proceedings. They made short work of the Bradford pace attack. Luke faced his first ball which he lofted for six over point, but soon after his presence was felt in the pavilion. This brought James C to the crease, who played some exquisite drives but could not progress after directing the ball in the air straight to short mid off. Andy capitalised on some short deliverys from the pace bowlers and played some magnificent strokes. So the Bradford skipper was forced to bring on the spinners. The spinners caused all sorts of problems for the batsmen including Andy and reduced the run rate dramatically and caused many wickets to fall. Kev Robinson was frustrated by the off spinner and charged down the wicket missing the ball completely and got stumped. The infamous 'Betty' came to the crease and played some nice cut shots but all directed straight to the fielders of Bradford. Paul Wilson looked more comfortable against the spinners and rotated the strike with Andy well after lofting a ball in the air for square leg to catch easily. One of their off spinners was bought back into the attack, in which bad selection of shots from Will and Duncan led to him picking two wickets in two consecutive balls, but Rob 'Pickles' Branston made sure the bowler not pick up the hat trick wicket. Andy made an impressive 68 not out, however one of their bowlers was overjoyed thinking he had bowled Andy out with a ball that bounced four times before hitting the stumps and then cursed when the square leg umpire(Jiten) signalled a no-ball.
So the Venturers had made a modest total of 116 with the loss of seven wickets and had to make sure Bradford did not get off to a good start. And so the skipper had entrusted the bowl to Kevin who opened the bowling attack with Duncan the other end. Kev bowled with venom and induced in-swing off the surface and destroyed the Bradford top order batsmen. He finished with impressive figures of 4-2-6-4 (O-M-R-W). Duncan was a bit wayward at first came back strong. Steve Penrose bowled extremely well but was unlucky as he caused the batsmen to lob the ball in the air just short of fielders. He was accompanied by Neil Pollard who bowled tight making it difficult for batsmen to play their shots. Will Bathhurst was introduced into the attack, bowling his quick off breaks. He bowled well again and picked up two wickets especially that of their(Bradford Team) star batsmen. The bowlers were backed up by excellent fielding, in particular by James C whose quick reactions and constant backing up saved the team a lot of runs. It was then left to Rob and James C to finish off the proceedings with Rob picking up a wicket but they could not finish off the lower order batsmen of Bradford. The Venturers won the game comfortably by 28 runs and were then led by Betty to the nearest drinking establishment for re-hydration!
