Arvind made a brisk start to this match but before he had really got his eye in he received something too tempting and was caught at cover. Rob B, sent in to hit out, did so, swatting his first ball to square leg. Roger was out soon afterwards and we were in the usual trouble. We were rescued in the usual way by Kevin and Chintan, and later Duncan. But Bradford had some competent bowlers, and didn't even use their rotund but effective leg-spinner who has done so much damage to us in the past. In a 40-over game we would have been not too unhappy with 113-5 after 20, but as a full total it was clearly not enough.
Rob B and Chintan made it look like plenty. For six overs they conceded barely a run an over, and those were miscues, a misfield, and frantic singles from defensive shots. Rob picked up a wicket, an efficient catch by Andy at deep mid-off. But in Rob's last over the new batsman, the competent bowler from earlier, slogged a six. He didn't have the least idea what he was doing, though it looked as if he was trying to ladle out some soup for the square-leg umpire, and it could have gone anywhere; but he got away with it and gave him the confidence he needed. James was brought on next - later events suggested that Gregory might have done better, but there was no evidence either way at the time - but he was no luckier. The soup shot carried all before it. Kevin, usually tight, was all over the place; suddenly we were losing, then lost. Two missed catches in Gregory's only over, one by the wicket-keeper and one by the bowler, showed that they weren't in control of where the ball went; but by that time it was far too late to matter, even if we had caught them. It all ended very suddenly. Indeed, Andy (apart from his catch) and Johan got no real game at all.
