Canal Taverners 140-2, Venturers 95-5

We had only ten players for this match initially, but two Bradford 39 players turned up at the ground under the impression that they had a match and one of them, having established that they didn’t, played for us. It wasn’t his fault that it made no difference.

Anand started well, bringing one back in and trapping an opener LBW in his second over and being generally hard to get away. Tom also started competently, but the second-wicket pair took a liking to his bowling and even more to Gregory’s. It never really got any better, although the other opener eventually missed a rare straight one from Gregory. From the other end, his partner smashed the window of a parked van. Several balls ended up in the distant hedge or the tennis court. In the middle of all this, Prasanth somehow bowled a maiden, but for once he didn’t take any wickets. Even Jamie, our loaned Bradford player, whom we have never found easy to hit when he has played against us, couldn’t slow the scoring.

We had chased that sort of score a few days earlier but this time Kevin got out straight away and Rohit’s timing never worked. Instead he decided on the anchor role, which was all right as long as Rasesh was there to push the score along; that is, not for long. Thereafter we had anchors at both ends, making us completely immobile. Rohit ended on 32 not out, which is perhaps not an especially helpful thing to do opening the batting in a 20-over match, but really it was the bowling that had let us down.
