Some of the students wear caps with BUVCC on them, and there is a vague idea among some of them that their team is called the Venturers. It isn’t, of course: that’s us, and we can prove it, so we suppress the idea as firmly as we can. They exact revenge by beating us at cricket. We did all right with the ball until the last couple of overs: they found Dan, Gregory and Arul especially baffling, and Bhargab got two stumpings. We were helped by a chaotic runout. But we thought anything much over 110 would be hard to get, and we conceded about 45 off the last five overs.

Only two of them had got to double figures, but those two had made eighty between them. Only two of us got to double figures too, but they managed only fifty. Bhargab batted through the innings for 32 not out; Chan (a student, who told us how to bowl to them, but they knew what to do when bowling to him), Varun, Farooq and Ben made ten between them. Aakshay alone showed the urgency needed, but he didn’t have enough time. They actually bowled a bit better that we could cope with.
