Explain your PhD in just three minutes

What is 3MT®

An 80,000-word PhD would normally take nine hours to present. The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), challenges doctoral students to do it in three minutes using just one slide and no props!

Since 2014 Vitae have proudly hosted the UK ®3MT competition which is the culmination of finalists from Vitae member Higher Education Institutions throughout the UK. The winner of the University of Bath 3MT Final is considered for the UK final.

Why take part?

Taking part is a great opportunity to reach new audiences with your research.

You will gain valuable, transferable skills in research communication and presentation. You will develop a concise ‘elevator pitch’ about your work in language appropriate to non-specialist audiences – a skill useful wherever your PhD or doctorate takes you.

You’ll also gain important exposure for the work you’re doing. Previous finalists have used the platform to reach new audiences with their research, helping them secure new funding or develop important collaborations.
