Leonard Rotherham obtained a degree in physics from University College, London, before taking up a post at Brown-Firth Research Laboratories to continue his work on the physical and mechanical properties of metal. He was subsequently employed as head of the Metallurgy Department, Royal Aircraft Establishment; Director of Research and Development, UK Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA) and Member for Research, Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). Dr Rotherham served as the second Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath between 1969 and 1976.

The collection contains material relating to various aspects of Rotherham's career including his university study, his work at UKAEA and CEGB and his role as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath. It also contains material relating to some of the societies and organisations with which Rotherham was connected in an academic, professional or personal capacity.

Material donated by Leonard Rotherham at the time of his retirement was supplemented with additional papers donated in December 1999 and May 2001 by Mr M. Rotherham, the son of Dr Rotherham.
