Dr Kate Charles Head of Research Development

Overseeing support for developing research grants, and working in partnership with academic research leads to maximise research funding success.

Role

Kate was appointed Head of Research Development in November 2016. She leads the development of research funding applications across a range of major funders, helping to grow the University’s research portfolio.

Kate is responsible for:

  • developing and facilitating large, multi-party, and high-quality, research proposals
  • ensuring that the Research Grant Development team is the main interface between academics and external parties, to facilitate publicly funded research funding
  • overseeing activities that nurture, support and grow our research power through significantly increased research income

Kate is a Member of the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) Training and Development Committee.

Career

Prior to joining Bath, Kate worked across a breadth of research and innovation support roles. These included Research Development Manager, Technology Transfer Manager, Contracts Manager and Head of Research and Commercialisation at the Universities of Cardiff, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Kate has experience in REF support; developing impact case studies; implementing research strategies; research grants and funding; research information; contracts negotiation; intellectual property management and exploitation.

Before moving to a career in Research Management, Kate was a research chemist, holding postdoctoral positions in academia and industry.

Education

Kate has an honours degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Materials Chemistry from the University of Exeter.
