2005) provides a fascinating insight into some of the country's
leading research and how it influences our social, economic
and political lives - both now and in the future.

This roundtable discussion organised by the
Wellbeing in Developing Countries ESRC Research Group (WeD)
aimed to contribute to the ongoing reflection on poverty and
its eradication. The struggle against poverty has been endorsed
internationally through the commitment to the Millennium Development
Goals. The discussion focused on the crucial question of aid
effectiveness. Efforts to eradicate poverty will be compromised
if aid agencies are not able to generate a clear and thorough
understanding of the processes that make poverty happen, and
then apply this systematically in their work.
The discussion was chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby.
Panel members included Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem (Director of
Justice Africa), Duncan Green (Head of Research, OXFAM), Joe
Hanlon (OU and Advisor to Jubilee 2000) and Allister McGregor
(Director WeD).

Eradicating global poverty: challenges
and prospects
Green Park Station, Bath
This exhibition offered information on a number
of important issues concerning poverty and how these are addressed
for example in the Millennium Development Goals. The exhibition
was open to the public with pre-booked question and answer
sessions organised specifically for students at local schools
and colleges. Members of the Wellbeing in Developing Countries
ESRC Research Group (WeD) were be available during these sessions.
WeD Social Science Week 2005 eventswere organised
in partnership with the UK Department for International Development,
the Make Poverty History campaign, Envolve and Bath &
North East Somerset Council.
