The following issues were discussed at the meeting of Senate.
Vice-Chancellor’s report
The Vice-Chancellor presented his report on key issues facing the University. He expressed his thanks to all members of the University community whom he had met so far. He also updated Senate on the recently published Augar review.
Curriculum Transformation
The Director of Academic Registry and Assistant Director presented an initial version of the Assessment and Award regulations for UG and PGT courses. Following a discussion about some of the details, Senate endorsed the general direction of travel, recognising that further development and consultation in the coming months would shape proposals to be brought forward in the autumn.
Research Excellence Framework 2021 – Code of Practice
Senate approved the REF Code of Practice, presented by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).
Policies
Senate approved a new Disabled Students Policy, with effect from 2019/20. Senate also noted the ongoing work reviewing the Student Complaints Procedure, Student Disciplinary Procedure and the Dignity and Respect Policy and Procedure.
Committee names and membership
FLTQC/DLTQC
Senate approved changes to the terms of reference and membership of Faculty/School Learning, Teaching & Quality Committees, and Department Learning, Teaching & Quality Committees.
Ede and Ravenscroft Prize Committee
Senate approved the renaming of the Committee to the Ede and Ravenscroft Postgraduate Research Student Prize Committee and broadening of its membership to ensure representation from all Faculties / School of Management and the Doctoral College.
Career progression
Senate approved revisions to the Career Progression in the Education and Research Job Family Principles and Framework document (CPER), which was updated to reflect the changes to the procedure for promotion to professor.
Staffing
Senate noted reports on Academic Staff Appointments & Promotions and the Annual Report on Professorial Promotions.
Appointments
Senate appointed Professor Keith Stokes as Warden of the Blues from 1 August 2019 for three years.
Academic Year
Senate approved the disposition of supplementary Assessment days within academic year 2020/21.
Student data
Senate noted the Degree Outcomes and Retention Rates and the Student Equality & Diversity Statistics for 2017/18.
Effectiveness Review
Senate appointed an external Chair for its Effectiveness Review. Further details to follow.
