Choose from a wide range of mathematics courses with opportunities to tailor your studies to your strengths and interests.


All of our courses are flexible and allow you to choose from a wide range of optional units after year one. On some courses, you may be able to switch during or after your first year.

If you're studying a BSc course, you can also switch to the MMath, giving you excellent preparation for going into research in pure or applied mathematics, or many other subjects that use mathematics.

When it comes to choosing optional units, you can tailor your studying to your personal strengths and interests, choosing options in areas of pure and applied mathematics, and probability and statistics. You can also select optional units offered by other departments, including topics such as economics, corporate finance, science education and core physics.

With all of our maths courses, you can choose to go on a placement after your second year. Many of these placements are paid or funded, allowing you to earn income to help support your studies.

With over 50 years of experience offering placements and links with some of the world’s leading research institutions and global companies, you can apply for a wide range of professional placements, from lab-based to marketing roles.

Be inspired by world-leading research. Many of our teaching staff are heavily engaged in research which means our courses are kept up-to-date and you'll benefit from discussions around the latest thinking in mathematics.

Our research activity covers several key areas and encourages collaboration and mutual support between groups and with other departments. Research groups include Algebra, Geometry, and Number Theory, Analysis, Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, Probability, and Statistics.

You'll choose a final-year project in one of these areas, working closely with an active researcher in the field.

Once you arrive, the Bath University Maths Society is a great way to meet new people from all years and across all course options. The Mathematics Resources Centre (MASH) is also on hand with drop-in sessions and workshops to help you work through maths and statistics problems.
