Funding for conducting research sustainably

Considering and reducing environmental impact is increasingly recognised as a critical issue and demanded by funders.

Funding requirements

In 2025, the University signed the Concordat for Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice, a landmark move in our commitment to advancing sustainability.

Expectations for our community

We take collective responsibility as a research community in helping tackle global environmental challenges and look for everyone to play their part.

Addressing sustainability in your research proposal

Information to consider before applying for funding.

Before completing a funding proposal, we recommend that you check whether your funder is a signatory to the research concordat. Some signatories have already published policies and requirements related to sustainability. This includes (but is not limited to):

While these policies offer comprehensive guidance, you can get further advice and guidance from:

Support and resources

In considering the environmental impacts of your research, you should also think about:

Internal funding opportunities

There are limited amounts of internal funding available to support sustainability actions in your research.

Energy efficient equipment fund

If you are replacing equipment, Campus Infrastructure can provide funding to help you pay for the most energy-efficient option.

You'll need to give them quotes for both the standard and more energy-efficient models. The funding can then pay the difference.

Net Zero Carbon Campus Fund

Offered by the Sustainability Team, this fund provides small amounts of money to support innovation and development that aims to reduce the University's carbon footprint.

Departmental budgets

Some departments allocate specific funds for sustainability upgrades.

For example, the Department of Chemistry has created a Green Fund, selling unneeded equipment and making the income available for anyone in the Department to apply for to use for sustainability actions.

External grants

Some funding is available across the sector to support furthering sustainability action.

We'll share details of external funding opportunities that support sustainability in research practice as they become available.

Current funding opportunities
