Godfrey and Sue Hall Doctoral Researcher Prize

Nominate yourself to win the prize for best doctoral researcher of the year.

The Godfrey and Sue Hall Doctoral Researcher Prize, previously known as the Ede and Ravenscroft Postgraduate Research Student Prize, is an annual award for the best doctoral researcher. This highly prestigious award was first awarded in 1991.

Nominate yourself

How to nominate yourself for the prize.

If you're a doctoral researcher, you can nominate yourself for the prize using the nomination form. To be eligible for the prize, you can be at any stage of your doctoral studies. Those who have completed their thesis within the 12 months leading up to the deadline for nominations are also eligible.

The Committee scores against the following criteria with equal weighting:

  • Clarity and strength of the case (scored out of 10)
  • Wider significance of the research (scored out of 10)
  • Original contribution to the research (scored out of 10)
  • Contributions to the life and reputation of the University (scored out of 10)

You will need to give details of your research work in terms that can be understood by a non-specialist reader. Your submission will be sent to your Head of Department, or Head of Division in the School of Management, for shortlisting.

Nominations for the 2025 prize are now open. The deadline for submitting your nomination to your Head of Department for shortlisting is midday Friday 21 March 2025.

How the winner is chosen

When and how your nomination will be considered.

After the nomination deadline, Heads of Departments will consider all nominations and create a shortlist of up to two departmental nominations to put forward to the Prize Committee.

The Prize Committee will then meet in April to consider all shortlisted nominations from across the University and select a final shortlist of up to five finalists to attend a finalist presentation event. The winner is announced at the Doctoral Research Celebration Evening, in June.

The Prize Committee is chaired by the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and includes members of the faculties, School of Management and the Doctoral College.
