The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint up to seven academics in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to strengthen our rapidly growing AI & Machine Learning Research Group.
Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a UG degree or equivalent experience. Membership in a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert, FHEA) are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate substantial research experience in their field, with an emerging track record for Lecturers and an established research profile with funding success for Senior Lecturers. A deep conceptual understanding of their subject, alongside experience teaching at UG/PG levels, is essential. Senior Lecturers should also exhibit academic leadership and a clear research vision. A commitment to excellence in research and teaching, student experience, and ethical professional conduct is essential. Additionally, Senior Lecturers must have up-to-date knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, including learning technologies, and a strong research strategy.
Reader in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
The ideal Reader candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. Membership in a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert, FHEA) are required. They should have experience in providing research leadership, a strong record of publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals, and proven success in securing research funding. The candidate must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the subject area and be up to date with teaching methods and learning technologies. Key skills include academic leadership, research vision articulation, excellent communication, teamwork, and positive relationships with academic, business, and community partners. A commitment to research excellence, ethical conduct, and enhancing student experiences is essential.

We research systems-wide issues ranging from mathematical foundations through visual and cognitive processes to artificial intelligence, human-centred design, and collaborative systems.
The Department of Computer Science has a large funding portfolio with a net worth of £17 million in directly managed grant income, and a further £30 million in partner funding. We have many external partners such as The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Sony, The Ministry of Defence, Qualisys, Lawn Tennis Association, British Athletics, British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association. Our partnerships with international research institutes include Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrucken; University of Auckland; National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo; and VISTA (York University, Toronto).
