Support for Care Leavers, Foyer residents and Estranged students

If you are leaving care, care experienced, or are not supported by your parents (estranged), the Student Retention and Success Team can provide support.

The University of Bath supports care experienced and estranged students to realise their potential. Support is provided in a number of ways including information and guidance as an applicant or current student.

The Student Success and Retention Team are a designated point of contact and support team throughout your time at Bath. Support includes:

  • help to access specialist support.
  • access to bursaries and scholarships (subject to eligibility) and support with applications.
  • regular communication and check ins with the Student Success and Retention Team.
  • events and opportunities throughout the year.
  • additional specialist careers support.
  • signposting students to fast-track support fir study skills, counselling and wellbeing.
  • with the students consent, work closely with their department to ensure they get the best grades possible.

We are committed to providing you the support you need to succeed academically and personally.

Applying to Bath as a care leaver

If you are a care leaver/care experienced we will give you advice and guidance throughout the application process.

The University of Bath encourages you to disclose your care experience so additional support can be provided. When you complete your UCAS application form, you will have the opportunity to share with your chosen universities whether you have been in care. As a Care leaver our team will:

  • Give you advice and guidance throughout the application process
  • Support you throughout your studies with 1:1 check in appointments with the Student Retention & Success Team
  • Provide financial assistance
  • Provide year-round access to University accommodation, 365 days a year
  • Offer opportunities to take part in activities outside of the classroom

Applying to Bath as an estranged student

The University encourages you to disclose your estrangement so additional support can be provided.


The University is committed to supporting estranged students and has a dedicated team to support you throughout your time with us. You may be eligible for additional funding and will be able to access specialist support from our Student Success and Retention Team.

When you complete your UCAS application form, you will have the opportunity to share with your chosen universities if you are estranged from your parents or carers when asked the question ‘Would you consider yourself estranged from your parents?’

Bursaries and Scholarships

The University of Bath offers eligible undergraduate students a non-repayable bursary


The University of Bath provides several bursaries and scholarships for which care leavers, care-experienced, and estranged students are eligible to apply.

Each of these bursaries and scholarship will have specific eligibility criteria and application processes. Our team can offer specialist advice and guidance on accessing these, providing eligibility evidence and supporting the completion of applications.

In addition to the support provided by the University there are a number of organisations and charities who can offer advice and support for care experienced, care leavers and estranged students.

Support can vary but includes financial support, coaching, connecting you to peers with similar experiences, guidance or information events. Our external organisation page provides details of some of the main organisations and how they can support you.
