Take part in the National Student Survey (NSS)

If you are a final-year undergraduate student, you can share your views on your time at the University.

The National Student Survey (NSS) is an independent anonymous survey run by the Office for Students and is sent to final year undergraduates across the UK. It asks them about their course experience.

Previous students gave their feedback in the NSS which has shaped your experience at the University. You can do the same for future students by being honest about what is good and what could be improved.

As well as enhancing the student experience, your responses will help future students decide where they want to study at university.

When you can complete the NSS

The NSS is open in Semester 2 every academic year.

You are eligible to complete NSS if you are in your final year of undergraduate study.

The NSS 2024 is now closed.

Questions asked

The NSS asks a variety of questions about your student experience.

You can see the questions asked in the NSS. They include:

  • teaching on my course
  • learning opportunities
  • assessment and feedback
  • academic support
  • organisation and management
  • learning resources
  • student voice
  • mental wellbeing service communication
  • freedom of expression
  • up to six additional banks of questions
  • three free-text comment questions

Giving constructive feedback

Giving constructive and detailed feedback in the open comments is most helpful for staff to make changes and improvements. You may recognise the characteristics of constructive feedback from the feedback you receive on your own work:

  • honest
  • specific
  • respectful
  • solution-focused
  • includes the good and the bad
  • how to do better next time

Your comments must be in line with the University's Dignity & Respect Policy and Procedure. Offensive or discriminatory comments will be investigated.

Prize draw

You can enter a prize draw for completing the NSS.

You could win one of three luxury prizes if you enter the NSS prize draw by the survey closing date. The prizes available are:

  • two Twilight Spa packages at Thermae Bath Spa for two people

How your responses are used and where to see the results

NSS results are discussed and used in several ways across the University.

Your anonymised responses will be discussed and used in Staff / Student Liaison Committees (SSLCs), Departmental Education Action Plans and committee meetings. Positive results may also be used for marketing purposes.
