Use our chromatography and related services

Chromatography is a technique used to separate a mixture into its individual compounds based on their physiochemical properties.

An overview of chromatography techniques

There are several techniques within our facility that separate compounds based on their size, charge and other physiochemical interactions of compounds, with mobile phases and stationary phases.

Techniques can be analysed by a variety of detectors. The choice of instrument depends on the samples, compounds of interest, and what type of data you would like to collect. Applications include:

  • basic identification
  • quantification
  • purity analysis
  • reaction monitoring

Our equipment

940 Professional Ion Chromatography Vario TWO/SeS

For analysis of anions and cations in aqueous solutions. This includes trace analysis and online monitoring of anions and cations.

GC Shimadzu Nexus 2030 GC coupled with BID detector

Using ionisation via a helium plasma it detects volatile organic compounds, including fatty acids. Samples must be liquid with no suspended particles and must be sufficiently volatile.

Agilent HPLC 1260 Infinity with DAD/UV/ELSD

This equipment separates the compounds via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and detects the compounds based on UV absorbance. It can also provide a full UV spectrum of the compounds it detects.

Agilent HPLC 1260 Infinity RI

This equipment separates compounds via HPLC and detects compounds based on their refractive index.

Dionex Thermo Scientific 3000 RS UHPLC

For separating compounds via ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and detection with ultraviolet light (UV). It's commonly used for routine UV-purity determination, including chiral separation dependent on column availability.

Size Exclusion Chromatography/Gel Permeation Chromatography Agilent 1260 Infinity

Using MDS it measures the distribution of molecular masses in a polymer. This is equipped with triple detection:

  • differential refractive index
  • viscometer
  • dual angles light scattering.

Two columns PLgel 5µm MIXED-d 300x 7.5 (with guard column). The system runs with THF ( tetrahydrofuran) mobile phase. Columns and detectors are at 35°, and it is regularly calibrated with a set of polystyrene or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) standards.

Shimadzu TOC-L-CPH/TNM-L

This piece of equipment measures the Total Organic Carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon, total carbon and total nitrogen of liquid samples with a range of 50-1,000 parts per million.
