Aims: To provide an introduction to the chemistry of modern materials and how technological applications drive development of new materials.
Learning Outcomes: After studying this unit the student should be able to: * compare and contrast methods for synthesising nanoparticles and applications of nanophase materials * give examples of templating methods for hierarchical structures and surface patterning and applications of these materials * give examples of solid state synthesis and structures * explain the operation of solid oxide fuel cells and the materials requirements * present structures and materials for lithium batteries. Skills: Facilitating data gathering, data analysis, critical thinking. Facilitating problem solving. Content: Nanoparticle synthesis, applications of nanoparticles, templated hierarchical structures, applications of hierarchical materials, solid state inorganic materials, structures and properties of materials for solid oxide fuel cells and lithium batteries. |
