Aims: The unit will provide training in a wide variety of techniques essential to the modern reseach chemist.
Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* write a long general scientific article on a topic at the forefront of science;
* present a reseach seminar to a general scientific audience;
* appreciate current trends in scientific research;
* analyse complex 2D NMR spectra;
* design programes suitable for running on modern NMR spectrometers;
* understand intellectual property issues in reseach;
* demonstrate effectively in undergraduate laboratories.
Skills:
Scientific writing (F, A), Independent working (F).
Content:
Postgraduate seminars; Chemistry Department's series of general scientific lectuers (the Millenium lectures); written article (2,500 words) on area of intense current scientific interest; oral presentation of this are to general scientific audience; advanced NMR techniques seminar and design of NMR programs; intellectual property seminar; effective undergraduate teaching seminar.
