Aims:
* To give students knowledge of the economics of the construction industry; * To develop a student's understanding of civil engineering project management. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit students should be able to: * demonstrate an understanding of the broad economic context in which the construction industry operates; * demonstrate knowledge of civil engineering infrastructure economics specifically * appreciated the economic implications of sustainable construction; * demonstrate a broad understanding of the process, tools and emerging trends in the management of civil engineering projects. Content: This unit is designed to develop the student's concept of both construction economics and project management. Introduction to construction infrastructure economics The macroeconomy and civil engineering infrastructure Externalities and environmental impacts of infrastructure Sustainable construction and the concepts of civil engineering projects [consideration of energy usage, resources, pollution, ecology, recycling] Project management - time, cost and quality Time - planning, programming, monitoring, programming software Cost - financial planning, principles of measurement and pricing, cost control, payments, variations and claims Quality - ISO 9000, systems, audits, philosophies, benchmarking, key performance indicators. |
