Aims: The aims of this Unit are twofold: firstly, to introduce students to the general ideas and ideals which have shaped cities; and secondly to familiarise the students with the techniques of urban analysis.
Learning Outcomes: On completion of this Unit, students will have demonstrated an understanding of: * the factors that contribute to the evolutionary development or formal design of cities; * the work of at least two key urban theorists of the 20th century; * the relationship between urban patterns and principles and the nature of a particular urban environment. On completion of the Unit students will have demonstrated the ability to prepare an urban analysis of a given locale. Skills: Ability to analyse an urban context, and the visual communication skills required to present such an analysis. Content: The Unit will introduce the students to the policies that govern urban design and will introduce a methodology used to assess the architectural qualities and character of a complex urban area.. The Unit will combine formal lectures on the history, theory and practiceof urban design together with student seminars, workshops and presentations analysing a particular urban environment. The Unit is integrated with the Design Studio projects. |
