Aims: To introduce and expand on advanced physical chemistry methods in spectroscopy, surface techniques and reaction dynamics.
Learning Outcomes: After studying this Unit, students should be able to: * Describe the different processes which control reactions at solid/liquid interfaces * Describe processes underlying electrode kinetics * Describe modern surface techniques * Discuss details of reaction dynamics * Describe the Polanyi rules * Interpret electronic spectra * Derive kinetics of complex decay schemes. Skills: Numeracy (F, A); Problem solving (T, F, A); Independent working (F). Content: Surface IR and STM / AFM. Electrochemistry: Voltammetry, electrode kinetics, Corrosion, fuel cells Modern methods of studying reaction kinetics molecular beams reaction dynamics advanced spectroscopic techniques Electronic absorption and emission processes. The fate of electronically excited states Fluorescence and phosphorescence. |
