Aims: To present an overview of the development of Russian literature and film in these years; to further develop skills in literary analysis and criticism; to introduce the study of Russian film.
Learning Outcomes: Students who complete the unit successfully will: * be familiar with the historical development of Soviet Russian culture before the Second World War and the particular contribution of major writers and directors; * have studied in depth some major literary texts and films of the period; * have improved their vocabulary, grammar and translation skills; * have improved their skills in the analysis and criticism of film and literature. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning and language skills are developed in this unit. Content: Two writers (studied in key works): Kharms, Zoshchenko. Films by Eisenstein and others. |
