AS20075 Pedagogy, play and the early years curriculum (2)

Requisites:
Aims: (to enable the students to)
* understand the importance of play in learning;
* encourage and support children to become independent and active learners;
* identify and examine early communication, language and literacy;
* continue to promote and research the adult's role;
* explore the early childhood curriculum in the context of different theoretical perspectives;
* examine the Foundation Stage including the 6 areas of learning in detail and the links and progress to the National Curriculum;
* support foundation stage children across all 6 areas of learning;
* to support the development needs of the children across maths, literacy, scientific knowledge, understanding and skills;
* identify good practice and planning in order to deliver a high quality early years curriculum and Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum.
Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to:
* demonstrate an understanding and appropriate practical application of the Foundation Stage/National Curriculum requirements in their setting;
* plan for, assess and evaluate children's progress, development and learning in all areas of the early years;
* monitor children's progress and attainment towards learning targets and goals;
* report on children's progress and inform parents and other agencies concerned with the well being of the child;
* demonstrate an understanding of and application of observations of children's play behaviour to the planning and delivery of an effective early years programme.
Skills:
Effective management of groups of children, activities and resources. Planning, delivery and implementation of an early years curriculum. Communication, working with others. Analysis, reflection, argument, applying knowledge to support problem solving and decision-making. Skills will move from descriptive to analytical from having some technical skills to a broader range.
Content:
This unit will examine theory practice and research in the field of early years education and care. Students will explore the importance of play in learning in relation to the Foundation Stage Guidance and the National Curriculum. A theoretical and historical perspective of the curriculum will be examined. Each of the 6 areas of learning in the Foundation Stage for Early Years: Physical development; Creative development; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Mathematical development; Communication, Language and Literacy development; Personal, Social and Emotional development, will be examined. Students will be expected to apply new learning and understanding to the planning, management and organisation of an appropriate early years programme in order to meet the developing needs of children in their setting or work place.
