Aims: To enhance critical understanding of the language of film through the acquisition of key theoretical and basic practical skills including camera work, and pre- and post- production techniques.
Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate: * practical and theoretical knowledge of a range of digital video cameras and formats, and the ability to evaluate their comparative technical specificities * an understanding of the structuring of a short digital film * an understanding of the fundamental techniques of film and video making, and the relationship between artistic and technological objectives * a working knowledge of digital editing techniques * a coherent appreciation of the relationship between diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Skills: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: * operate a digital video camera, showing an understanding of shot compostion * use digital video and sound editing software * produce a storyboard for a short digital film before shooting and editing that film * work with others as a team to shoot a short film. Content: This unit will provide an introduction to the basic techniques of filmic discourse; it will provide elementary technical training through the use of video and DVD technology. The unit will focus in particular on: camera skills; editing; lighting; sound techniques, including mixing, dubbing, and music, within the context of low-budget, short film. Seminars and workshops will include topics such as: * The basic techniques of film discourse * Shot composition and basic camera skills * The role and practice of music * Editing skills * Planning and scripting for short narrative films * Team-work skills in filmmaking. |
