Aims: To understand how thermodynamics and fluid mechanics can be applied to engineering systems.
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Calculate pressure losses and flow distributions in duct/pipe networks. * Perform cavitation calculations on simple systems. * Analyse open channel flow systems. * Calculate the thermodynamic properties of gas-vapour mixtures. * Perform combustion calculations involving dissociation. * Carry out 2nd Law analysis on systems. * Perform compressible flow calculations including the effects of friction and heat transfer. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently. Content: Pipe flows and networks. Cavitation. Open channel flow. Gas vapour mixtures. Combustion. Rayleigh flow. Fanno flow. Topics for self study that could be examined. |
