Description: | Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit the learner will be able to: * Describe and apply management theory * To discuss the importance of time management as contributing to the continuous improvement of their own and others professional competence. * To identify and set objectives for their own and others training and development needs. * Identify the theory and principles of management techniques in particular those of communication, delegation, information handling, planning, monitoring, evaluation and time management. Skills: The professional practice for this unit is that the learner must demonstrate whilst working as a Senior Practitioner that they can: * Develop self to improve own performance * Manage their own time and resources to meet their objectives Content: 1. Significant and emerging theories and principles of: a) communication b) information handing c) management competence d) monitoring and evaluation e) planning f) time management 2. Methods, techniques and processes relating to: a) communication b) delegation c) information handling d) management competence e) monitoring and evaluation f) organisational context g) planning h) time management i) training and development. 3. Information and facts about: a) organisational context b) planning c) training and development. To develop self to improve performance the learner will need to know and understand about: Communication * the importance of getting feedback from others on their performance and how to encourage, enable and use such feedback in a constructive manner. Management competence * the principal skills required for effective managerial performance * the types of interpersonal skills required for effective team work. Organisational context * the current and likely future requirements and standards within their job role and how they correspond to the learner's level of competence as a manager * appropriate people from whom to get feedback on their performance. Training and development * the importance of continuing self-development to managerial competence * how to assess their own current level of competence * how to develop a personal action plan for learning and self development with realistic but challenging objectives * the types of support which may be available from their team members, colleagues, line managers and specialists * how to identify the need for support, select an appropriate source and obtain required help * the types of development activities and their relative advantages and disadvantages to their own situation * how to assess own personal progress and update their plans accordingly. To manage own time and resources to meet objectives the learner will need to know and understand about: Delegation * how to delegate work to others and monitor progress. Information handling * how to assess how much information is required before an effective decision can be taken * how to collect and check the validity of the information required for decision making. Monitoring and evaluation * the importance of regular reviews of activity and rescheduling of work to achieve planned objectives. Planning * how to set objectives for self which are specific, measurable and achievable * how to plan activities so that they are consistent with known priorities and the learner's own resources * how to estimate the amount of time required to carry out planned activities * the kind of contingencies which may occur and how to assess and plan for these. Time management * the importance of effective time management to managerial competence * how to identify and minimise unhelpful interruptions to planned work. |
