Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are to: * investigate forming and shaping processes; * investigate material removal processes; * investigate joining processes. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students should be able to identify appropriate: * material casting processes; * material shaping processes; * material removal processes; * material joining processes. Skills: During this unit students should gain the following skills: Intellectual * gathering, processing and analysing technical information (A) * formulating outcomes (A) Professional * making written and verbal presentations (A) Practical * developing identification and observational skills to maintain records and contribute to reports (T,A) * carrying out practical investigations of manufacturing systems (F,A) Key * writing reports (A) * identifying appropriate manufacturing processes (A) Content: This unit concentrates on: * primary casting processes; sand, investment, gravity and pressure die casting; * primary shaping processes; rolling, forging, extrusion, drawing, presswork and blanking; * primary forming processes; injection moulding, vacuum forming, compression/transfer moulding and blow moulding; * material removal processes; milling, turning, grinding, cutting tool materials and cutting fluids; * welding processes; manual metal arc, oxyacetylene, metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas and spot welding; * joining processes; brazing, soldering, adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening. |
