Description: | Aims: This unit aims to: * Explore the history of drug and alcohol misuse. * Explore students' beliefs for the reasons of drug and alcohol misuse. * Enable students to understand the range of alcohol and drug related problems. * Introduce students to the concepts and classifications of substance misuse and dependence. * Present a historical perspective on societal responses to drug and alcohol use. * Explore legal, social, political and medical responses. * Introduce students to the current Drug and Alcohol Strategies and the NTA 'Models of Care'. * Develop an understanding of historically important and current models of intensive psychosocial treatment. * Develop an overview of current counselling models and interventions. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students will be able to: * Define the types of problems associated with substance use. * Construct an effective opinion of addiction. * Understand the application of pharmacological, psychological and sociological models to the treatment of substance misuse. * Describe current legal and political frameworks to manage substance misuse. * Describe the main current treatment modalities. * Give examples of how a counselling model may be applied by an addictions counsellor. Skills: * analysing how theoretical concepts can be applied to the clinical setting. * formulating an opinion based upon an analysis of a clients presenting problems due to substance use * verbal and written communication. * essay research, preparation and writing. * the use of IT to communicate and manage information. Content: This unit is concerned with: * Substance Use and Misuse: history, reasons and types of problem. * The Concept of Dependence. * Models of Addiction: overview of biological, psychological and social models - the bio-psycho-social integration. * National Strategies on substance misuse. * Models of Psychosocial Intervention: Overview of Motivational, Cognitive-Behavioural and Family Systems interventions and treatment settings. |
