| Description: | Aims: This unit aims to: * Develop the student's knowledge and practical skills in the planning and administering of peripheral joint mobilisation techniques. * Analyse and evaluate differing methods of injury treatment and conduct thorough and in-depth research on recent developments in the Sports Therapy field. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit students will be able to: * Develop a critical awareness of manual therapy and mobilisation techniques to the peripheral joints of the body. * Recognise the typical symptoms and common clinical signs associated with common sports injuries to peripheral and vertebral structures. * Evaluate the physiological responses of injured tissue to heat, cold, stretching, exercise, mobilisation and immobilisation. * Provide treatment in different sporting environments: Clinic, sports pitch, changing room, sports hall etc * Mobilise peripheral joints using Maitland and Mulligan mobilisation techniques and manual therapy in a safe and effective manner. * Mobilise vertebral joints using Maitland and Mulligan mobilisation techniques and manual therapy in a safe and effective manner. * Evaluate principles, concepts and applications of manual therapy. * Research and critically evaluate findings and current trends in mobilisations and manual therapy. * Give rational and valid reasons, supported by evidence, for treatment and techniques provided. * Evaluate the effectiveness of manual therapy treatments relating to recent research and patient evaluation and feedback. Skills: Intellectual: (T, F and A) Knowledge of current theoretical concepts in manual therapy and justification for the use of treatments with accurate evaluation. Professional: (F) Independent research; report writing; consultation; assessment and evaluation skills. Practical: (T, F and A) Safe and effective application of manual therapy techniques; safe and effective assessment of patients; progression of treatments. (T: Taught, F: Facilitated, A: Assessed) Content: * Examination and assessment procedures. * Posture and gait assessment and re-education. * Peripheral mobilisation, advanced massage and stretching techniques. * Vertebral mobilisations * Proprioception, mobilisation, stretches and strengthening exercises for the upper and lower body - early and intermediate, late and pre-discharge stages. * Core stability and dynamic work. * Research analysis. * Guest speakers and discussions concerning recent therapies and developments in injury treatment. |
