Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are to rationalize the use of composite materials used in the motorsport industry. The impact of Composite materials on the performance and safety of competition vehicles will be examined. How composite materials have affected the design parameters of a competition vehicle will also be considered. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit students should be able to: * Analyse and evaluate a range of composite materials; * Evaluate the impact of manufacturing low volume and production components in a range of composite materials; * Justify composite materials in the design of competition vehicle components in relation to alternatives. Skills: During the unit students should gain the following skills: Intellectual: * Gathering, processing and analysing of technical data (A) * Formulating strategies based on available data (A) Professional: * Make written presentations (A) * Rationalize a decision based on available evidence (A) Practical: * Understand the processes involved in manufacturing components using composite materials (T,A) * Carry out structural tests on a range of components manufactured from composite materials (T) Key: * Writing reports (A) * Using graphs and tables to present experimental results (T,A) * Applying numerical techniques (T,A) Content: This unit includes: * Carbon Fibre; * Kevlar; * Glass reinforced plastic; * Vac-bagging; * Resins; * Use of an Autoclave. |
