Description: | Aims: To develop a systematic understanding of the language and practice of moving-image composition. To promote dynamic engagement with relevant theoretical , critical, and analytical concepts. To analyse the relationship between written and visual narrative techniques. To evaluate critically a range of narrative strategies in relation to scripting, editing and other pre- and post-production techniques. To develop creative individual compositional strategies. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: * demonstrate advanced understanding of, and familiarity with, filmic techniques and narrative structures; * demonstrate a conceptual and critical understanding of relevant theoretical concepts; * engage analytically with diverse forms of filmic discourse and practice and contribute creatively to current debate concerning research and scholarship; * appreciate and respond to the relationship between theory and practice. Skills: Intellectual: * Independent research and learning (F/A) * Advanced critical and analytical skills in relation to theories and practices of moving image composition (T/F/A) * Dynamic critical engagement with theoretical concepts (T/F) * Ability to compare and evaluate potential and actual narrative strategies (T/F/A) * Analyse, interpret, and critique findings (T/F/A) Vocational/practical: * Ability to relate practice and theory and to act creatively upon findings (T/F/A) * Understanding of demands and constraints of film and media industries (T/F/A) * Fluency in key pre- and post-production skills in as much as they apply to narrative development (T/F/A) * Practical application of relevant narrative strategies reflecting advanced understanding of filmic codes and traditions (T/F/A) * Ability to research, develop, evaluate critically and bring to fruition independent film-making project (F/A). Content: Deconstructing the image: critical and theoretical parameters. Theories of narration and the construction of visual narratives. Techniques of story telling: critical analysis of montage, mise-en-scène, viewpoint, camera angles etc. Literature and Film: the theories and practice of adaptation. From Script to Screen: the processes of adaptation. The film and media business. Scripting and story boarding workshop. Feature and animation. Analytical case studies & practical workshops. |
