Description:
| Aims: To plan, conduct and complete an experimental, literature-based or theoretical/ computational project using academic research facilities in the Departments of Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students should be able to:
* Acquire and critically review technical information on a chemical engineering subject.
* Produce a working programme for the project and carry out their research according to this
programme.
* Critically discuss the results generated during the project, evaluate these results in the
context of the literature data available.
* Summarise the main project results and suggest directions for further work on the subject.
Produce a professional report and poster on their project.
Skills: Acquisition and critical review of technical information on a subject; laboratory practice and data analysis, advanced experimental and/or computational skills; skills in tackling unresolved scientific and/or engineering problems, report writing; presentation skills. Facilitated/taught and assessed.
Content: After allocation of the projects students must meet their supervisor/s to discuss the project objectives.
* During the initial project stage in semester 1, students must undertake the necessary background reading, prepare necessary materials, carry out appropriate safety assessments and devise a work programme. At the end of this stage (two weeks) a short preliminary report summarising this work must be submitted to the project supervisor.
* During the second stage of the project, students will carry out research according to their work programme in consultation with their supervisor/s. To complete the work on the project, students will need to produce and submit a detailed report.
