Description: | Aims: To confirm the candidates' competence for the practice of architecture and through the demonstration of professional awareness, knowledge, understanding of the context for practice, and their ability in the management of architecture and the management of construction. Learning Outcomes: Candidates who have completed this unit should be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of their obligations and responsibilities as professionals to clients, employers, to the profession, to other members of the building team and to society, and to demonstrate competence and capability to practice within the profession. Skills: Candidates are required to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of professional practice and project administration, and to convey a clear ability to apply this knowledge in practice in a co-ordinated, accurate and relevant manner, and to demonstrate sound professional judgement in decision-making. Content: The unit will develop the candidates' knowledge and understanding of the overall structure and management of professional practice and the legal and legislative matters that impact upon the practice of architecture through the appreciation of the ethical, legal, legislative and practical attributes required for the practice of architecture and the administration of construction projects. The programme will deliver the following subjects to on which the candidates will be examined in two closed papers: * The context for Practice: The Construction industry and the architect in practice; Health and Safety and the process of design and construction; the social and economic context for investment in the built environment; advisory and government agencies, quality and technical standards and the control of construction industry practices; Professional Practice and the Codes of Conduct; The architect and the Employer; design team structure and organisation. * Contract form and application: Types of contract, Procurement, Warranties and Rights; Project Management, quality and cost control. Information flow, programme monitoring and management; post completion assessment and maintenance manuals. * Constraints and Law: Legislation, Regulations and Dispute resolution; Risk management, control and the duty of care; Intellectual property and copyright. * Professional Practice: Forms of Practice, funding and financial management. Practice administration, staffing and organisation; Project organisation, assessment, feedback and team structures; Insurances and Marketing; Appointments and fees; Insurances, payment and financial control. |
