Description: | Aims: This unit aims to: * Review the construction process and the information needed to carry it out; * Understand the role of communication in successful project delivery; * Introduce the students to a range of information and communication technology [ICT] applications; * Provide an opportunity to reflect and apply leading-edge ICT solutions to industry based problems. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit students should be able to: * Appreciate the importance of information to the success of construction projects; * Understand the nature of information flow during construction projects; * Be aware of the existing common problems related to communication and information management in construction; * Identify the specific relevance of these problems in their workplace; * Have knowledge of potential benefits offered by various ICT based communication and information management applications; * Propose an appropriate system that helps to overcome the existing communication and information management problems in their workplace. Skills: Intellectual skills * To problem solve through an evolving case study - taught and assessed Professional/Practical skills * To provide students with the ability to design their own communication and information management system - taught and assessed Transferable/key skills * To communicate ideas verbally and in writing - facilitated and assessed * To synthesis and critically review taught materials - facilitated and assessed. Content: The unit is divided into the following sections: Introduction - Characteristics of construction, importance of information, role of communication, existing CIM problems, drivers for improvement Information production and communication - project information, information types, project communication, coordinated project information Information Management systems - fundamentals, types of IMS, ICT developments Collaboration and communication tools - collaboration technologies, development of collaboration tools, examples of collaboration tools Integration and BIM - need for integration, integration strategies, BIM, examples of BIM. |
