Description: | Aims: To seek to show: * The challenge that the environmental agenda presents to the construction industry. * The nature of the political and legal responses to the challenge. * The nature of the construction industry response to the challenge. * The match between the challenge and the political, legal and construction responses. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Appreciate the challenge that the environmental agenda presents to the construction industry and the response to that challenge. * Understand the principles of 'best practice' environmental management. * Carry out an environmental impact assessment [EIA] of a chosen site. * Create an environmental mangement system [EMS] for a medium size construction project. Skills: Intellectual skills * To problem solve through an evolving case study - facilitated and assessed. * To understand and analysis taught material - taught. Professional/Practical skills * Ability to apply environmental management concepts relevant to construction - taught and assessed. * Ability to write an EIA - taught and assessed. * Ability to create an EMS - taught and assessed. Transferable/Key skills * To synthesis and critically review taught material - facilitated and assessed. * To communicate ideas, analyses in writing - facilitated and assessed. Content: Sustainable development, the environmental challenge, environmental impact of development, legislation principles, methods of response, environmental supply chain management, scenarios and opportunities for recycling during inception, design and construction. |
