Description: | Aims: This unit will equip learners with knowledge and ability to: * Evaluate the effectiveness of an existing information system. * Model an ICT based business information system. * Generate a business solution. * Use ICT skills to build a business information system. Learning Outcomes: At the completion of the unit, learners should be able to: * Investigate a business information system at an organisation and analyse strengths and weaknesses. * Recognise the legal aspects involved with developing and maintaining information systems with an organisation. * Propose a business solution that incorporates sound development practice. * Apply database and programming concepts and techniques to create a small business information system that would provide a valid business solution. Skills: Intellectual skills. Content: * Appreciate the different types of organisations that exist (e.g. public and private sectors) * Understand how organisations are structured to meet corporate goals (e.g. functional roles and responsibilities). * Information requirements at different levels (strategic, tactical and operational) * The differences between data, information, and knowledge * Issues associated with obtaining, evaluating, storing and ensuring the accuracy of information * The role of information in gaining a competitive advantage * Information processing tools and methods * Types of information systems. |
