Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the benefits of networking, the structure and nature of networks and their differing forms, their typical hardware and software components and to consider issues in the design, implementation, operation and management of networks. Learning Outcomes: To achieve this unit a learner must be able to: * Display understanding of fundamental networking principles * Describe key network components and their use * Construct and use a range of networked setups (simple peer-to-peer, switched and wireless LAN, client/server) * Relate hands-on networking experience to theoretical models. Skills: Academic skills - understanding networking principles and the use of theoretical models in the study of network protocols (A) Practical skills - manipulation of networking devices and media (F) Personal skills - working in groups to design, build, test and manage a variety of small networks (F) Communication skills - written work covering practical experience and theoretical understanding (A). Content: This unit will cover a range of related topics, from basic signal theory through to the principles underlying large commercial computer networks. Areas of study should include: * Networking components - e.g. connection media, NICs, patch panels, hubs, switches, WAPs, routers, clients, servers and printers * LAN topologies and access control methods * Current protocols and addressing * OSI Networking models Client and Network Operating Systems * Potential server roles: DHCP, DNS, IIS, File server, Print server * Microsoft forest/domain client/server model. |
