| Description:
| Aims: Main Aims of this unit are: * Explore substance misuse problems from a family systems perspective. * Increase students awareness of their own family systems, particularly in relation to alcohol and drug use. * Review key research into how family members are affected by and how they respond to addiction problems. * Describe the resources available to support and help family members. * Develop a model of including family members in the treatment process. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students will be able to: * Understand substance misuse problems from a family systems perspective. * Describe typical family roles and coping strategies in families with alcohol or drug addiction. * Integrate a range of resources and services into their practice which are designed to support relatives and friends of problem drug or alcohol users. * Conduct interviews and conjoint meetings with family members as part of a client's treatment plan. * Make appropriate and sensitive recommendations to family members about obtaining information, help and support for themselves. Skills: * Analysing how theoretical concepts can be applied to the clinical setting; * The use of appropriate counselling skills for this client group; * Show awareness of interpersonal dynamics; * Transferring knowledge and skills across different settings; * Reflect on own performance and respond positively to feedback; * Essay research, preparation and writing; * The use of information technology to find, communicate and manage information. Content: This unit is concerned with: * Family dynamics and responses to addiction problems; * Understanding the family system; * Resources available to family members; * Integrating family work into individual treatment. |
