Description: | Aims: This unit aims to bring students with good mathematical skills and confidence up to the standard of knowledge and skills in mathematics required for University entry. The unit will build on the Further Maths 1 unit and draw upon more advanced aspects of the A level Maths and the Further Maths syllabus. This unit will offer opportunities for knowledge acquisition and practise in standard methods of solution. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to demonstrate competence in the concepts listed in the content section below. Skills: Application of theory to the process of solution of mathematical problems. Content: Algebra Complex numbers - forms, sums, product, quotient. The Argand diagram. Complex solutions of polynomial equations. Euler's relation. De Moivres theorem and application to trig identities and roots of a complex number. Simple loci and regions on the Argand diagram. Sequences and series Recurrence relations. Binomial series, n rational. Integration First order differential equations - separable and exact. First order linear differential equations with constant co-efficients using integrating factors. Second order linear differential equations with constant co-efficients. Arc length and area of surface of revolution. Numerical methods Location of roots using simple iterative methods and Newton Raphson process. Vectors - Definitions and operations in 2D and 3D. Scalar product. Vector equation of a line. Intersection of two lines. Angle between two lines. Vector product. Triple scalar product. Vector equations of planes. Points of intersections of lines and planes which meet. |
