| Description:
| Aims: The aims of this unit are to: * investigate the functions and structures of an engineering business; * develop and apply skills of financial planning control; * develop the concepts of project planning and scheduling in an engineering organisation. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the student should be able to: * explain the origins and development of UK engineering organisations; * apply engineering professional practice, professional ethics and engineers, the functions of the professional societies; * appreciate the discipline of management to engineering and core techniques of management, including programming and scheduling; * explain the impact of engineering practice and technological innovation, leadership and control of human, physical and financial resources in public and private sector; * appreciate aspects of engineering management responsibility, including human relations, industrial relations, quality and environmental management systems as well as sustainability. Skills: During this unit students should gain the following skills: Intellectual: * gathering processing and analyzing information (F, A) * synthesizing models of organizational structures (T, F) Professional: * making written and verbal presentations (F) * applying costing techniques and methods (T, A) Practical: * maintaining records of research carried out (T, A) * carrying out investigations of engineering organizations (F) Key: * writing reports (A) * applying numerical techniques (T, A). Content: This unit concentrates on: * the business environment, including organisational structures and business functions; looking at inter-relationships for information and communication * management styles * management of quality * managing design and new product development as well as aspects of materials management * human resource management - the individual and groups/teams of people. * measuring financial performance including costing and pricing. * managing for sustainable operations. * project investment decisions and project management. * maintenance management. * inventory management as well as management of the supply system. * marketing. |
