Description: | Aims: The aim of this module is to introduce students to the range of skills necessary to carry out the social work process to an appropriately professional level. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the module students will able to: * Use communication skills to form and develop relationships with service users/carers and other professionals (Key Role 1 Unit 1 Element 1.2; Key Role 2 Unit 5 Element 5.1 b, c & d). * Negotiate the limits of relationships & confidentiality (Key Role 2 Unit 5 Element 5.1f; Knowledge Indicator 3e) * Deal constructively with disagreements & conflicts (Key Role 5 Unit 17 Element 17.4 a-e) * Transfer skills to new & unfamiliar contexts (Key Role 6 Unit 18 Element 18.3 d) * Apply professional knowledge and skill to the social work process (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.1a) * Challenge effectively & use professional assertiveness to justify decisions & uphold professional social work practice, values & ethics (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.2 a, b, c) * Reduce contact & withdraw from relationships appropriately (Key Role 2 Unit 5 Element 5.5) * Communicate with service users & their carers in ways which recognise & respect their diversity in terms of age, ethnicity, culture language, level of understanding, expertise & experience (Knowledge Indicator 3d). Skills: Communication skills; working with others; effective challenging; developing relationships with service users, carers, groups and other organisations; anti-oppressive practice. Content: The interview process; negotiating the limits of confidentiality; engagement; 'door openers'; the SOLER model; active listening; open questioning; empathy; reflection & paraphrasing; pattern recognition; constructive challenging; closure; cultural differences in verbal & non-verbal communication; working with diversity in communication. |
