Requisites: | Before taking this unit you must take CH30055 or take CH30060 and in taking this unit you cannot take CH30127 or take CH40127 or take CH30030This unit is only for students who have completed an MChem Placement or Study Abroad Year and who did Inorganic Chemistry by Distance Learning. |
Description: | Aims: To introduce the principles of the chemistry of the heavy transition metals. Learning Outcomes: After studying the Unit, students should be able to: * Explain the systematic trends across the d-block elements. * Contrast the differences down individual d-block triads. * Explain the principles behind the formation of metal-metal bonds in heavy d-metals. * Explain the structure of and bonding in clusters of the heavy d-block metals. * Analyse unseen data in the chemistry of these elements. Skills: Problem solving (T, F, A); Self-study (F). Content: A description of the chemistry of the second and third row d-block elements. The contrast between the chemistry of these heavier d-block elements with those of the first row. Metal-metal bonding in second and third row metal complexes. Selected chemistry of a d-block triad with an emphasis on metal clusters. |
