Description: | Aims: This unit aims to introduce students to the main principles of sport development in Britain. Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this unit the student will: * Understand the socio-economic, cultural and educational context of sport development locally and nationally * Understand the basic principles of sport development through a range of local and national case studies * Understand how sport is organised in Britain * Understand the contemporary sport and social policy framework within Britain * Understand the impact of various partnerships within sports development in Britain to planning and implementing initiatives * Identify tensions between elite, school and community sport provision. Skills: Intellectual: * Develop the skills needed for academic study and enquiry T/A * Synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding of theory and practice for sport development T/A * Apply strategies for appropriate selection of relevant information from a wide source of knowledge regarding sport development T/A Professional/practical * Effectively and efficiently apply principles of sports development within a variety of environments T/A Transferable/Key * Utilise problem solving skills in a variety of theoretical and practical situations T/A * Take responsibility for personal and professional learning and development F * Manage time, prioritise workloads and utilise planning skills F Content: 1. the context for sport, leisure and recreation development in Britain 2. sporting organisations in Britain UK Sport Home Country Sports Councils Home Country Institutes of Sport British Olympic Association National governing bodies for elite sport The relationship between government and national governing bodies for sport School sport Recreational sport Range of roles within organised sport 3. the principles of sport development Sport policy and politics Resource allocation Development of infrastructure Sport provision within the public, voluntary and private sectors and national agencies and their impact on the structure of sport 4. specific sport structure documents and major sport policies Case studies of local and national sport development initiatives. |
