Description: | NB. Students wishing to take this unit should apply via the Foreign Languages Centre website from August onwards. Aims: The course aims to consolidate language acquired, for example in Semester 1, and to encourage students to extend their active and passive vocabulary, to improve accuracy and the complexity of the language used, to increase their confidence in using Mandarin for spontaneous interactions. The course aims to help students access increasingly more demanding reading and listening material and to make them more effective participants in a business environment. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the course students will be able to: * Give clear detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and examples. * Understand the gist and some detail of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of personal and general interest and on current affairs and business matters provided the delivery is clear. * Use reading strategies to access texts, which use up to 1500 simplified characters. Skills: Speaking, Reading, Listening in the target language - all assessed Interpersonal skills, communication, team skills - facilitated IT skills - facilitated Intercultural skills - facilitated and taught Autonomous learning - facilitated Research and organisational skills - facilitated Cognitive - taught. Content: Intensive language work with emphasis on aural comprehension, oral communication and reading skills. Texts and topics for discussion are taken from the world of business, politics, culture and students' personal interests. |
