Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to introduce the spectrum of patient information systems including remote healthcare, specifically clinical system development and evaluation. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Critically discuss the spectrum of clinical systems and their function in the collection and management of data for patient care including the Electronic Patient Record (EPR)/ Electronic Health Record (EHR) concept * Demonstrate how systems are developed and the use of modelling techniques * Critically evaluate the significance of decision support systems to assist with effective and shared decision making More specifically students should be able to: * Critically evaluate various systems development and evaluation methodologies * Critically evaluate user involvement in system development and evaluation * Discuss the concept of computer anxiety * Quantitatively evaluate a healthcare information system These learning outcomes will be taught and assessed. Skills: On completion of this unit students should be able to: * Contribute to effective systems planning and deployment in the healthcare setting (Taught, facilitated and assessed) * Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs (Taught and facilitated ) * Integrate and critically evaluate information gathered from a wide range of resources including the unit resources, text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed (Taught, facilitated and assessed) * Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions (Facilitated). Content: This unit explores how systems in healthcare may be developed and evaluated to enhance the healthcare process. This unit covers the following topics: * The spectrum of Patient Information Systems Specifically it will include: * User Involvement in Systems * Healthcare Informatics Implementation * Clinical terminology * Standards * Clinical Systems * Remote Healthcare. |
